Turkey turns 100: A future global power? – BBC News


The Republic of Turkey turns 100 on the 29 October.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, known as the ‘Father of Turkey’, had envisaged a modern, secular nation-state when he founded it from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire.

With a history of military coups disrupting its democracy, the country is now ruled by President Erdogan, a leader with ambitions to revive the Ottoman influence on the global stage.
