In a joint statement, the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan, have condemned Iran’s attacks on civilian infrastructure, and have called on it to stop its threats to vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law," the statement from the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan said.
"The effects of Iran’s actions will be felt by people in all parts of the world, especially the most vulnerable."
The group also expressed its "readiness" to contribute to "appropriate efforts" to ensure safe passage through the vital shipping channel, which around 20% of global energy supplies pass through.
The price of gas has risen sharply in the UK and Europe following Iran’s attack on Qatar’s Ras Laffan energy complex.
Iran’s strike was in response to Israel hitting its South Pars gas field, located offshore in the Gulf, between Iran and Qatar.
