Many supporters of Ukraine had cherished the hope that this summer might see a military offensive that could liberate occupied territory and lead to peace.

That started early this month, but the Western consensus about Ukraine’s counter-offensive seems to be that it’s too early to say whether it’s succeeding.

So what are the Ukrainians trying to achieve, and how long will it take to see any limit of how far they can go? Newsnight’s Diplomatic Editor Mark Urban explains.
