Ukraine’s President Volodymr Zelensky says he has had a "long and meaningful" telephone call with China’s President Xi Jinping.
It is the first contact between the two since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
China confirmed the call, adding that it "always stood on the side of peace".
Unlike the West, Beijing has sought to appear neutral on the Russian invasion and has never condemned it.
