One of the major casualties was South Africa’s HIV and Aids programme.
US President Donald Trump said the cuts were part of wider cost-cutting drive to reduce American government spending.
At the time, South Africa’s health minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, told the BBC it was a "wake-up call".
