Members of Congress are split after President Donald Trump’s senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, briefed the lawmakers on the US’s removal of Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro.
The Republican House Speaker, Mike Johnson, said the US was "demanding a change of how a regime rules”, not carrying out a regime change, and that Trump was within the authority given to him by the US Constitution.
Meanwhile, Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the US Senate, said the meeting had raised more questions than answers and characterised the plan to run Venezuela as "vague, based on wishful thinking, and unsatisfying".
Trump insisted during a news interview that the US was not at war with the country and that the person ultimately in charge of Venezuela was "me".
