US pauses military aid to Ukraine as EU chief says Europe is ‘ready to step up’ | BBC News

Europe is read to "step up" on defence, the European Commission President has said, after the US announced it was pausing military aid to Ukraine.

Urusula von der Leyen said Europe was in an "era of rearmament" as she outlined plans to mobilise close to 800bn euros of defence spending.

US Vice-President JD Vance has said the door is open for Ukraine to return to negotiations if President Volodymyr Zelensky "is willing to seriously talk peace".

On Monday, President Donald Trump criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for saying the end of the war with Russia is "very, very far away".
