The United States has said it does not seek a war with Iran but will “protect itself” and “respond appropriately” following a drone attack by an Iran-backed group killed three US soldiers and wounded dozens more in Jordan.
The group behind the attack is called Islamic Resistance in Iraq. They are part of an Iranian-sponsored network across the Middle East known as the Axis of Resistance.
US military bases in Syria and Iraq have faced repeated attacks since the October 7 attacks on Israel and the war in Gaza.
The three US service personnel killed in the drone attack have been named as William Jerome Rivers, Kennedy Ladon Sanders and Breonna Alexsondria Moffett.
President Biden is considering how to respond to the attack. The US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has said his country will respond “decisively” to aggression, take "all necessary steps" to protect its troops and hold those responsible for the drone attack to account.
