The US secretary of State is in China aiming to put relations between the countries on a steadier footing.
Antony Blinken has been in Shanghai holding meetings with business leaders. He’s now heading to Beijing for talks with the country’s foreign minister, Wang Yi.
Although tensions have eased since last year, disagreements on issues such as trade and security remain.
Blinken is visiting China less than a month before the inauguration of William Lai, the pro-sovereignty president of Taiwan reviled by Beijing, and there are concerns it would lead to a spike in tensions in the Taiwan Strait as well as the larger South China Sea.
