The US has warned that it will carry out more attacks on targets in Nigeria, after it launched airstrikes against what it said were Islamic State group fighters in the north-western state of Sokoto.
The US defence secretary Pete Hegseth warned on social media that there was “more to come”, while the Nigerian government talked of “joint ongoing operations” with US forces.
Nigerian government forces have been fighting a long war with Islamic State fighters in the north of the country. President Trump said he had ordered the strikes to protect Nigeria’s Christians who have been targeted by IS.
Nigeria’s foreign minister said that the IS fighters attacked Muslims as well as Christians. He said his government had provided intelligence and had been “working closely with the Americans… to combat terrorism”.
