Violent crime soars in South Africa with murders at 20-year high | BBC News

In South Africa, violent crime is soaring, with the murder rate now at a 20 year-high.

Since 2012, the number of murders has risen by 77%. The latest figures show that more than 27,000 people were killed in the course of a year.

And the number of murders that are solved has fallen to just 12%.

Many of those living in fear work in the security sector, with audacious heists of security vans commonplace.

Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Daniel De Simone in Johannesburg.
