Weather and years of war hamper rescue efforts after deadly Turkey and Syria earthquakes – BBC News


Rescuers are racing to save people trapped beneath the rubble after thousands of buildings collapsed in Turkey and northern Syria in yesterday’s huge earthquakes. 

An international rescue effort is under way following the quakes that have killed more than 5,000 people across both countries.  

More than 1,600 people have been reported dead so far in northern Syria following the quake. 

The region is home to millions of refugees displaced by the civil war.
