No survivors are expected after a plane carrying 64 passengers and crew collided in mid air with an army helicopter in Washington DC around 21:00 local time on Wednesday.
BBC Verify’s Nick Eardley takes a look at what we know about the collision, as well as analysing the cut-down audio of air traffic controllers before the crash.
Figure skaters from the US were among those who were on board the aeroplane. Russia has confirmed that some of its citizens were also on board.
Major incidents of this kind are relatively rare in the US, with the most comparable crash occurring in Buffalo, New York in 2009, where 50 people died.
