What’s behind the UK’s Christmas love affair with pantomime – BBC News


The festive season is upon us, and in the theatre world that means one thing – time for the humble pantomime to take centre stage.

While it may not be the most highbrow form of entertainment, it is for many the gateway into theatre – and what’s more, it is a big business.

Pre-pandemic, three million panto tickets were sold each year in the UK, and Glasgow has a special affection for it.

Historically, if a crowd in the Scottish city did not enjoy a performance, they would be the first to let the act know about it, as the BBC’s The Travel Show has been finding out.
