Why has Elon Musk been pushing for a government shutdown? | BBC News


The US is edging towards another government shutdown after the lower chamber of Congress failed to pass a spending bill to keep federal agencies open.

Funding is set to lapse at midnight on Friday unless Republicans and Democrats can agree on a way forward.

Elon Musk is pushing for the move – the Tesla boss has been tasked with identifying spending cuts by co-leading the proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

President-elect Donald Trump followed his calls to reject a bill that would have kept the government funded through March.
