Bangladesh’s National Party (BNP) has won a landslide majority in the country’s parliamentary election, setting its leader Tarique Rahman on track to become the next prime minister.
It was the first poll since the student-led protests ousted the autocratic leader Sheikh Hasina, ending her 15-year rule.
With Hasina’s Awami League banned from taking part, the election pitted the centre-right BNP against a coalition led by the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami, which joined forces with a party born out of the Gen Z uprising.
Voters also endorsed sweeping constitutional reform in a referendum held alongside the general election.
