The Elgin Marbles "belong here in the UK" and should not be given back to Greece, the UK’s culture secretary has said.
Michelle Donalan said the removal of the artworks – otherwise known as the Parthenon Sculptures or Parthenon Marbles – would “open the gateway to the question of the entire contents of our museums".
Her comments follow reports the British Museum, where the marbles are currently displayed, is close to a deal to return the ancient artworks to Greece.
