The UK government’s Nationality and Borders Bill returns to the Commons this week.
New legislation will criminalise people knowingly arriving in the UK without permission and will also introduce longer maximum sentences for those entering the UK without a legal reason.
The government hopes the overhaul of asylum rules will deter migrants crossing the English Channel, but Labour said the blueprint would potentially break international law.
Newsnight’s David Grossman reports. Emily Maitlis is joined by home office minister Tom Pursglove, former shadow home secretary Diane Abbott and Conservative MP Christopher Chope.
