Witch trials: The women accused of being ‘agents of Satan’ – BBC News


In 16th and 17th century Scotland, roughly 4,000 people were accused of witchcraft.

The rate of executions were five times higher than the European average – and of the accused, 85% were women.

The BBC’s Melissa Hogenboom explores why women were so vulnerable to accusations of witchcraft and why they were accused of being ‘agents of Satan’.
