A woman who was born as a result of rape says she hopes her successful campaign to classify people like her as victims of crime will mean others won’t feel alone.
‘Daisy’ – not her real name – was born after her birth mother, aged 13 at the time, was raped by a family friend.
As an adult Daisy tracked him down and tried to get him prosecuted for the rape but police said she wasn’t recognised as a victim. In 2021, he was convicted and sentenced to 11 years in jail.
The government has now announced plans to extend the definition of ‘victim’ in the statutory Victims’ Code to all those who believe they were born as a result of rape.
