The British and Irish prime ministers have issued a joint statement calling for calm after days of rioting in Northern Ireland.
Police in Belfast say the violence is the worst they have seen in recent years, scenes that so many had hoped were a thing of the past.
During an emergency session of the Northern Ireland Assembly politicians on all sides lined up to condemn the attacks.
