House of Representatives fails to elect Speaker for first time in 100 years – BBC News

The US House of Representatives has been left in disarray after failing to vote for an elected Speaker.

A small group of Republicans refused to back front runner Kevin McCarthy, who fell short of the 218 votes needed to succeed Democrat Nancy Pelosi.

The Republican Party narrowly won control of the House in November. It is the first time in a century a Speaker has not been elected in the opening round of voting.

The House will return on Wednesday, and will keep voting until someone has a majority.
