Russia blames Ukraine missile attack on soldiers’ mobile phone use – BBC News

A Ukrainian rocket strike which killed at least 89 Russian soldiers happened because troops were using their mobile phones, Russia has said.

Use of banned phones enabled Ukraine’s military to locate the troops in Makiivka, in the occupied Donetsk region, officials said.

It is the largest number of deaths Russia has acknowledged in the war.

But Ukraine disputes the death toll, claiming 400 soldiers were killed in the New Year’s Day attack, with another 300 wounded.
